Children are naturally interested in activities they have witnessed. Therefore, Dr Montessori began using what she called “Practical Life Exercises” to allow the children to do activities of daily life and therefore adapt and orientate themselves in their society. Practical life exercises are the foundation of the Montessori environment and provide a safe and wholesome range of activities which allow children to develop control and coordination of movement, awareness of their environment, orderly thought patterns, independent work habits, responsibilities, and many other characteristics which can only be attained through spontaneous, purposeful work. These exercises are designed to provide an opportunity for work and assist children in their development; physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally.
Through working with these essential life materials, it fulfils children’s innate desire to imitate significant adults in their life. The children are also being freed from hazards they face at home as they are shown on the correct usage of these practical life materials. Furthermore, these practical life materials are child’s size and thus allow children to understand their own limits.
